Migrants as vectors of institutional and cultural change

Abstract

Migrants impact institutional and cultural change of sending and receiving countries in many ways, both compositionally and through cultural transmission (from migrants to natives or vice-versa). The lecture will review the relevant literature within a unified theoretical framework. It will then discuss in depth frontier research in the economics of migration that aim at empirically identifying various channels of migration-driven institutional and cultural change, including "exit" (i.e., political selection into emigration), impacts of immigration on instituions of the host society, and political remittances. It will have a strong political economy and economic history content.
