Multimodality, manipulation, and malintent: A "Three-M" framework for multimodal disinformation
Abstract
The ubiquity of short-video platforms (e.g., TikTok, Douyin, Kuaishou) has amplified the circulation of multimodal disinformation. To address this challenge, this study proposes an integrative theoretical “Three-M” framework (multimodality, manipulation, andmalintent) to examine the construction, dissemination, and politicization of disinformation. Through a case study of disinformation related to the 2023 French Riots on Chinese short video platforms Douyin and Kuaishou, this research investigates the actorsresponsible for disinformation production and dissemination, the semiotic strategies underpinning its multimodal architecture, and the socio-political malintents driving its circulation. Findings reveal a prevalent “truth-weaving” tactic, where disinformation is strategically embedded within factual elements to enhance its credibility, and underscores the centrality of state-aligned media entities in advancing narratives that reinforce domestic ideological agendas. By elucidating the interplay between multimodal complexity, manipulative strategies, and layered sociopolitical malintents, this study contributes to the research of disinformation, offering a critical lens for deconstructing multimodal deception. The insights underscore the need for multimodal literacy to mitigate the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated digital deception.
