Economic Development, Institutions and Democracy
Abstract
This talk revisits the long-standing debate on whether economic development fosters democracy. Combining new theoretical insights with historical and contemporary data, it challenges the conventional linear “modernization” view and uncovers a non-monotonic relationship between income and democratic outcomes. I show how rising incomes can initially dampen political mobilization before eventually strengthening democratic participation. The analysis reconciles conflicting empirical findings and sheds new light on the economic foundations of political change.
