Title : Informal and formal institutions of economic governance

A brief overview of the working of informal institutions of property right protection and contract enforcement, such as information networks, sanctioning norms, and private ordering. Discussion of the limitations of informal governance, and the process of transition toward formal state governance. Empirical studies are interpreted in the light of theoretical models.
