Title : Participation in Elections

Outline: Voting is the most basic political activity in a democratic society. Understanding why people vote and what affects turnout is one of the fundamental questions in political economy. Early models of pivotal voting find some support in the laboratory but have difficulty explaining large scale elections. Recent models of social preferences and peer punishment better fit the data. The lecture will review the theoretical and empirical literature on participation in elections from the early rational theories of voter participation to the most recent advances.
